The race in Dallas was full of controversy for extremely high temperatures, some of the highest in Formula 1, with the track being rough and breaking up. However Keke was able to rise above the rest of the field and conquer the conditions by winning his third offical race in F1, achieving the first Honda turbocharged win and first Honda powered win since 1967.
It would be a difficult qualifying session with the 40 degree C air temperature and 60 degree track temperature but Nigel Mansell was able to take his first pole by setting a 1:37.041, ahead of team mate Elio de Angelis in the Lotus. Derek Warwick managed third in his Renault with Keke only eighth with a 1:38.767.
The 1984 Grand Prix of Dallas would surprisingly be the only race to ever take place at the circuit despite the amount of attention it achieved through high profile guests. The actor Larry Hangman, made famous for playing J.R. in the TV series Dallas would wave the green flag for the parade lap and the then US President Jimmy Carter was also in attendance.
