1985 Detroit Grand Prix

After a poor start to the season with three consecutive retirements, followed by an eighth and forth place finishes, Keke's season took off with his second consecutive US F1 Grand Prix win. After this win Keke would go onto score another, two poles and three fastest laps throughout the rest of the 1985 season, finishing third in the final driver standings.

Pole was achieved easily by Ayrton Senna in the Lotus setting a 1:42.051 and comfotably beating Nigel Mansell who lined up second in his Williams with Michele Alboreto third for Ferrari. Keke was able to qualify fifth with a 1:44.088 despite using qualifying tyres, (unlike team mate Mansell who used the soft compound rubber). For the race though Keke swapped to the same soft compound, a decision that at the time seemed odd compared to the harder compund cars around him, but which was the perfect call on race day.

Senna made the made the most of his pole and took the lead at the start followed by Keke who had passed Mansell, Prost and the slow-starting Alboreto. On lap seven, Senna and Keke were ahead of Mansell by seven seconds, but a lap later Senna would have stop for tyres, promoting Keke into the lead. It would be a poor race for the McLaren's with Prost and Lauda both experiencing brake problems. Lauda was out on lap 10 and Prost crashing on

lap 20. By this stage Keke had risen 24 seconds ahead of Mansell. Further back de Angelis, having got past Alboreto into thrid place chased down second placed Mansell, forcing him into a spin and grabbing second place. Then losing another place to Johansson, Mansell pitted and retired after crashing on his out lap.

Martin Brundle in his Tyrrell, was having a great race and was running forth until lap 30 when he had to retire due to a collison. De Angelis was also in the wars and was forced to pit for front wing damage, returning further down the pack. On lap 50 Keke would pit to get paper out of his radiators and put on some new tyres, still allowing him to get out ahead of Johansson and pull away. Senna recovered well to challenge Alboreto for third but on lap 52 crashed pushing to hard to make up time. An easy win for Keke would finish with him 57.549 seconds ahead of second placed Stefan Johansson, with Johansson's Ferrari team mate Michele Alboreto in third.
