Now in his second season with Williams as the reigning Formula 1 World Champion and having won just a month earlier in the Race of Champions, Keke came to Monaco in '83 on top of his game. It is often noted that Monaco is a track where car advantage if secondary to driver skill and ability, and this is particularly true when it rains in the principality. So the 1983 Monaco Grand Prix gave Keke the perfect ooportunity to show why he was World Champion.
With rain slowing the times by around 20 seconds on the Saturday session, qualifying was effectively decided in Thursday qualifying. Frechmen Prost, driving for Renault, and Arnoux for Ferrari took first and second. Their team mates Eddie Cheever for Renault and Patrick Tambay for Ferrari took third and forth, while Keke took a remarkable 5th in his non-Turbo car. Neither McLaren qualified for the event because of the weather on Saturday and poor habdling Michelin tyres.
Keke's win in Monaco would mark the penultimate win for the Cosworth DFV that had once been so dominant in Formula 1. Michele Alboreto would take the last win a few races later in Detroit before turbo powered cars would take over the sport completely in 1984.
