After a poor start in the official F1 World Championship, Keke would make amends by completely dominating the 1983 Race of Champions event at Brands Hatch. Although the race only featured half the cars of a normal F1 of the time, due to the Paul Ricard test clashing with the event, enough top line drivers competed to make it a diffciult but rewarding win for Keke.
The established names from Formula 1 dominated the qualifying session with Keke taking pole position with a 1:15.766, Rene Arnoux in his Ferrari qualified second just 0.073 seconds behind, and Alan Jones placed his Arrows third. John Watson would quailfy forth for McLaren, Danny Sullivan fifth for Tyrrell and Nigel Mansell set a 1:18.894 to go eighth for Lotus.
Both Keke and Rene Arnoux got off to good start, holding their relative positions, but Danny Sullivan moved into third after being given a nudge under braking for the first corner, the extra momentum forcing him into overtaking Jones around the outside.
Early retirements were Stefan Johansson after four laps, with the new Honda engine failing, Mansell stopped with handling difficulties on lap 6, and John Watson two laps later with transmission issues. Arnoux was also having problems but with tyres, his Ferrari wearing its rubber extremely badly despite the temperatures being relatively cold. He would first pit on lap 7 and another further two times, but by lap 23 and without any tyres left he was forced to retire.
Also suffering with tyres issues, Keke began to get caught by Sullivan who was using a softer but "scrubbed" set of tyres that was stopping him have the same problems. For the final 15 laps Sullivan continued to catch Keke, getting very close but never managing to overtake, despite running side-by-side at the end. Rosberg held on to win from Sullivan by 0.490 seconds, with Jones half a minute behind in third place in his Arrows.
The 1983 Race of Champions at Brands Hatch was the last non-championship Formula 1 race to take place as of 2012. The further professionalisation of Formula 1 and ever expanding grids mean that these races don't need to take place any further and would
now be difficult to organise.
